Do Anti-Snoring Pillows Actually Work?

On July 8, 2014, The Vancouver Sleep and Breathing Center did a research study on snoring. According to their findings, there are a lot of people that snore while they are sleeping. Below is a list of their findings:

Person Range Percent Who Snore
Over the age of 30 30%
Over the age of 40 40%
Women 19%
Children 5.6%

orppwsAlso, according to these findings, 59% percent of the people say their partner snores at night and the average decibel level of snoring is 38 decibels. Twenty-eight percent of these people who snore also experience some form of sleep apnea. As you can see, there are a lot of people who snore each night. If you are one of those people, you are most likely wondering if anti-snoring pillows really do work to relieve or at least help with your snoring at night. Not everyone wants a snoring mouthpiece, for sure, so it’s an important question.

In most cases, aside perhaps from the very innovative Smart Nora System (review here), there are special orthopedic pillows that are available for you to buy that may help to reduce or even eliminate your snoring. These anti-snoring pillows all have the same basic job: to realign your head and neck to help you clear your airways while you are sleeping at night.

When you snore, your airways are blocked, it is simple as that. Not all people have the same results when sleeping with an anti-snoring pillow. The anti-snoring pillows are most effective with people who have mild snoring problems. Before you try anything else for your snoring problem (such as making an appointment with a sleep study doctor), you should first try to see if an anti-snoring pillow is going to work for you.

How Do You Sleep At Night?

Not everyone sleeps in the same position. There are people who sleep on their back, some on the sides, and some on their stomachs. If you sleep on your stomach, an anti-snoring pillow is almost never going to work for you. You need to either sleep on your back or side. Before you decide which anti-snoring pillow is going to work for you, you need to decide which way you are going to prefer to sleep: on your back or on your side.

For Back Sleepers

If you sleep on your back, it is a known fact that a person’s snoring risk is increased. If you do really like to sleep on your back, there are anti-snoring pillows that are designed for you. If you are a light snorer, these pillows will most likely work for you. You should look for an anti-snoring pillow that has a large support under the back of the neck. You will also want to find one that has a concave section for the back of your head. These anti-snoring pillows are designed to pull your head back, align your neck and open up your airways.

For Side Sleepers

If you sleep on your side, this is one way that you can try to relieve your snoring. If you still have problems with snoring and are sleeping on your side, there are some pillows which can help you. Many times, these pillows are for people who do not have a mild case of snoring. These anti-snoring pillows are designed to correct your sleeping posture while sleeping on your side. These pillows are designed to have you to sleep with your head angled slightly downward, which in turn will prevent your tongue from blocking your airways.

Anti-Snoring Pillows Are Not for Everyone

Anti-snoring pillows will work for many people but they are not going to work with everyone. Some people do not like the positions that the pillows have you sleep in and they find them very uncomfortable. It will take you some time to get use to using them. It is definitely worth trying out an anti-snoring pillow to see if it will help alleviate or help with your snoring problem, especially since the anti-snoring pillows are one of the most economical snoring remedies that you are going to be able to find today.

  1. This is a very informative article. Thanks for what may be one of the best snoring pillow summaries on the web!

    • Unfortunately, in most cases, no, especially if you’re buying direct from the manufacturer. It should be noted, however, that Amazon does have a 30 day no questions asked return policy on almost everything. These pillows, sadly, are often just expensive regular bed pillows with a little different shape. In short, although they sound great (stop snoring with a pillow? I’m in!), they are not as effective as snoring mouthpieces. But for mild snorers, they are definitely worth a try.

  2. A very comprehensive guide for stopping snoring! My name is james I am quite a heavy snorer and need some guidance as to what would work for me.
