University of Warwick researchers found that people who reported improved quality of sleep over that time period, or who reduced the amount of sleep medications they took over that time, tended to also improve their scores on screening tests for physical and emotional health.

Overall, their mental health improvements over the four years were comparable to those seen in British lottery winners two years after hitting a medium-size jackpot worth up to about $250,000. So, to be clear, we’re talking about a long-term mood boost—not the immediate euphoria of striking it rich.

Unsurprisingly, people whose sleep patterns got worse over the study period were more likely to see their physical and emotional health scores go down.

“It’s rewarding to see the alleged fraudsters held responsible. Because of the close cooperation and work between the whistleblower and the government, we were able to recover significant funds for the government,” Hayes Hartman said in a news release. “It is gratifying to represent people like Elma Dresser, who bravely stepped forward with knowledge of her employer’s wrongdoing. Many do not appreciate the risks whistleblowers face to hold alleged wrongdoers accountable.”

The company owns 20 clinics in Northern California that treat patients with sleep disorders. According to the suit, the clinic’s owners and operators, Anooshiravan Mostowfipour, 58, and Tara Nader, 58, had billed Medicare going back to April 2002 for sleep tests by technicians who did not have the needed certification.

According to the news release, the lawsuit “alleged that the defendants fraudulently billed Medicare for sleep studies conducted by unlicensed individuals in unapproved locations; improperly dispensed durable medical equipment from unapproved locations using unlicensed technicians; and paid doctors for referrals in violation of the federal Anti-Kickback Statute.” The company’s owners did not admit to or deny liability.

Michael Khouri, a lawyer for the owners, said in the SFGate.com report they “continue to deny any wrongdoing. The case was settled because my clients believe in spending their time making money rather than litigating in the courthouse.”

The settlement was announced by the U.S. government on Dec. 28 and as part of the settlements, the owners are not allowed to make any Medicare claims for three years.

Dr. Nowak says patients can expect 80% of snoring to dissipate after three treatments. Patient Bob Novinskey is seeing results after just one treatment.

It’s an interesting use for beams of light and seems to go in the right direction. There are people who will be interested in the procedure, especially because of the low recovery time. Australian medical device company Oventus Medical recently launched a new 3D printing facility in Melbourne that will produce new anti-snoring devices customized to an individual’s specific needs.

The Oventus 3D printing facility is located at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization’s (CSIRO) Clayton site. It will manufacture O2Vent, a lightweight titanium device which stops patients from snoring by delivering air to the back of the mouth, alleviating multiple sites of obstruction including the nose, soft palate and tongue.

Research shows that sleep apnea, which is caused by excessive snoring, can lead to high blood pressure, stroke, irregular heartbeats, heart attacks, and diabetes.

The company said the device could benefit the estimated one million Australians that suffer from sleep apnoea and millions more around the world.

Australia’s Minister for Innovation, Industry, and Science Greg Hunt said it is a major step forward for Australian innovation that changes lives and creates employment.

Oventus’ partnership with CSIRO has been cited as an example of collaboration between private sector and public research, creating businesses opportunities and new jobs – a key aim of the National Innovation and Science Agenda.

Research Director of CSIRO Manufacturing Dr. Keith McLean attributes the science organization’s unique multidisciplinary capabilities for the speedy delivery of the Oventus project.

While this idea is cropping up in the Land of the Down Under, that doesn’t mean the idea won’t come to North America either. It might already be here, just happening in secret. It’s a great idea and an awesome example of how to make partnerships work. It’s exciting to see a technology like 3D printing being used for such a practical purpose. The patient is not required to be connected to any sort of sensors to assess the activity. The recorded sounds are processed and classified to determine specific events such as coughing, wheezing, or snoring.

To evaluate the accuracy of the software, the research team performed an analysis which included 350 volunteers. It was found that the smartphone-based system was able to accurately verify the sleeping events and assess the sleep–wake activity and obstructive sleep apnea in the subjects.

Professor Tarasiuk and Dr. Zigel said, “We have built a contact-free speech signal analysis that can aid in early diagnosis of sleep disorders and obstructive sleep apnea.”

On July 8, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) closed its period for public comments regarding a proposal that would make it mandatory for all commercial drivers to be tested for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which has been identified as one of major causes of truck accidents.

The NTSB, in consultation with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), is expected to make its recommendation before the end of 2016, which could authorize the U.S. Department of Transportation to propose a new law regarding the treatment of sleep apnea among commercial truck drivers.

Because sleep apnea interrupts the sleep cycle, people with this disorder often struggle with focusing and remaining alert during the day.

And occupations such as truck driving are physically and mentally taxing, which when combined with sleep apnea, can make for a fatal combination for other drivers.

Sleep Apnea Stats Among Commercial Drivers:

Some recent statistics show that truck drivers are particularly vulnerable to developing sleep apnea.

A joint study by the University of Pennsylvania, FMCSA and the American Transportation Research Institute of the American Trucking Associations, found that 28 percent of commercial truck drivers have mild to severe apnea.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reported in 2014 that drowsy driving resulted in 328,000 accidents, 109,000 injuries, and more than 6,000 fatalities each year.

What’s even scarier is that truck drivers are more likely to exhibit certain risk factors of sleep apnea.

Does this mean that sufferers of sleep apnea can never be truck drivers? Of course not. What this means is that the industry has identified a potential safety issue and are taking the steps to manage it. The good news is that the more people who are identified as having OSA, the more assistance they can get. Remember, not everyone has someone in their bed who can let them know what they do in their sleep. There is no other way for people to find out just what goes on during the night if no one tells them.

While this may be an occupation people with OSA should rethink going after, it doesn’t mean that being a truck driver is impossible. Driver fatigue has long been a serious issue for truck drivers so it should be comforting to know that serious thought into the causes of fatigue are being investigated. We will continue to need truck drivers until they invent teleportation. Until that time, let’s make sure our roads, and our truck drivers, are safe.

Er, OK. Giving your tongue a “workout”, eh? Now, the cynic in us wonders if this is a lot like those “electric ab belts” that are supposed to zap you into full on South-Beach-style six pack abs. As in, some hype, kind of cool as a concept, but frankly not useful at all. Possibly even a scam.

But, this is just speculation, of course. The SnooZeal may in fact work. Their website does not really display any particular way to order the product, so this may in fact just be a beta-style product. There is nothing on the site in terms of clinical trials, or really anything about how you can actually buy a SnooZeal for yourself!

And still, we have to commend the SnooZeal folks for attempting to attack the obstructive sleep apnea problem at its source: your tongue. If this product is more than just vaporware, it does have the real possibility of changing lives!

One of the major concerns users had was with the size of the SnoreRX so the company responded in kind. Released just last year the improvements to the mouthpiece are already being lauded by users. The company kept the features users have become used to and worked on making it sleeker an more comfortable. This is a great example of a company being told that something isn’t working and then going ahead to do the best they can to make it better for their customers. Not many corporations tend to care about what their users think and those are the ones you will find who produce cheap, and grossly ineffective, products that they try to foist off on users.
